Pro Palestina protest in Amsterdam

Gisteren was een demonstratie in Amsterdam tegen de recente Israëlische militaire invasie in Gaza. Het was wel bezochte gelegenheid waar verschillende mensen, gelovigen niet gelovigen, hand in hand protesteren tegen de massamoorden van de Israëlische troepen. Behalve verschillende politici, maatschappelijke organisaties, muzikanten,waren er ook opvallende veel moslim organisaties zowel religieuze als seculieren, hoewel de eersten vooral veel aanwezig waren gezien de mensen gehoor had gegeven aan oproep in verschillende moskeen in Amsterdam en omstreken. Het bleek een succesvol demonstratie te zijn.

Ik was daar aanwezige met een aantal van mijn vrienden van academische wereld die niet van bepaalde etnische of geloof afkomst waren maar zij gewoon daar waren omdat zij zich betrokken voelden met de ‘cause’. Wij hebben speeches gehoord van verschillende mensen en werden wij opgewarmd door allerlei muziek optredens, en dan begon de protestmarch die via verschillende Amsterdamse straten weer bij het museumplein moest beëindigen.

Tijdens de protestmarch verschillende leuzen werden uitgeroepen, ter steunen voor de Palestijnse volk: ‘onze bloed is voor Palestijn’, of ‘stop de oorlog’ enz. Er waren veel oproepen in Arabische , dat op zich niet erg was. Wat opviel was dat er veel religieuze slogans werden opgeroepen wat er op lijk dat ik niet met een protest meeloopt maar achter een begrafenisstoet aanloopt ergens in een Moslim land. Daarnaast was de betekenis van sommige Arabische oproepen niet vredelievend tegen sommige bevolkingsgroepen.

Na een tijdje mee te hebben gelopen gingen een aantal van mijn vriendenclub weg. Zij vonden de sfeer van de protest ‘te religieus’. Een tijdje door te marcheren vond ik een andere vriend vanuit India te staan kijkend naar achteren: ‘Ik heb mij te lang bij een groepje gevonden die alleen maar in Arabische iets uitroept; nu wacht ik op de groepje samba’s die helemaal achter de tocht aankomt’.

Ik denk dat wij moesten rekening houden met de multicultureel aard van de protestmarch op zulke gelegenheden en onze slogans en leuzen kiezen volgens dat soort bredere aanhang. Slogans in Arabisch of Turks zijn op zich geen probleem, gezien er veel Turken en Marokkanen bij de protest waren, maar er moet ook kreten in het Nederlands zijn om iedereen mee te nemen. Bovendien kan minder religieuze uitroepen de boel beter bij elkaar brengen, immers de Palestijn kwestie geen religieuze zaak is.

ISIM to be closed as per 1 January 2009

The International Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World (ISIM) will be closed as per 1 January 2009, due to the lack of adequate funding. ISIM was set up ten years ago by the universities of Leiden, Amsterdam, Utrecht and Nijmegen, and the Netherlands Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. The objective of the institute has been to carry out innovative research into the social, political, cultural and intellectual trends and movements in present-day Muslim communities and societies worldwide.

As testified by the February 2008 international peer-review committee that was appointed at the request of the Dutch Ministry of Education, ISIM has been an excellently performing, internationally leading institute in its field. It has been pioneering in interdisciplinary research of contemporary Muslim communities and societies, and in combining scholarship and societal cooperation.

It is indeed a great loss to an objective studies of Islam and Muslim societies that the ISIM conducted in the last decade. Its significance multiplied considering the debate about Islam and Muslims in the Netherlands and Europe in last years.

In the beginning ...

A new blogger with the title 'lived Islam'.

Through it I will time to time communicate with others about 'lived Islam'... thus less about all kinds of '...ism' with Islam as thier title but how Muslims actually live it in their everyday life.

These are the days when the appointment of a Moroccan as the mayer of Rotterdam city led to calls of 'Islamization of the The Netherlands' and suspected 'Muslim roots' of American presidentail candidate Obama were again focus of media. How far the descendents of the Muslim migrants in the West can claim in broader public space?
